HP(HTC) Ipaq 111 Windows Mobile 6 Pocket PC AKA "Windows Mobile Classic Device"

This is what's still widely referred to as a "PDA" "Pocket Pc" or. Bluetooth and WIFI capability allow you to access data without...err...a "data plan" I was able to sync my GMAIL inbox with it in almost no time. There is also a functional, though not extensive Facebook app. Google maps works pretty well on it.

Reasons I prefer this device to an IPHONE: I had neither the need nor desire to have telephonic capability from the device. Let my phone be my phone. Included charger is a USB to AC/power adapter. The unit also charges through a regular USB connection to PC,which means you can take it to any computer and exchange data through the common and prevalent USB standard. The IPAQ is expandable up to 32 Gigs I believe, through the side located SD/SDHC card slot. There are many applications available. The file format is .CAB, i.e. "cabinet files" which appear as zipped or rarred compressed folders when you view them on a PC. Executable Cab programs are diverse. There's organizers, wifi sniffers, several internet browsers, text and ebook readers for most major formats, several PDF readers, specialized programs for engineering and data, image editing, rudimentary CAD, and I have no doubt that specific and or proprietary software has been written for specialized applications for your organization.

The Operating System(OS) is Microsoft Windows Mobile 6. It has been described that the unit is capable of running Linux though there are more opportune devices of this type for that functionality I believe. You will perhaps want to customize it with more intuitive file and menu structure cab files as some of the interface elements are written in a less than intuitive fashion, but that's a matter of preference. The standard menus are usable.

If you find yourself in many locations all at once you can certainly pair a bluetooth keyboard with it and type up reports on the fly.

I stood at the local Microcenter, in my hand an example of the unit I had just ordered(prior to having received it), suddenly a bit dismayed when I gazed at the screen of its next model up- the 211. The 211 has a 640x480(VGA)resolution, while the 111 is only 320x240(1/4 of or'QVGA') That's my only major gripe about the 111, and QVGA isnt horrible by any stretch for most tasks. That...and...bummer...no GPS unless you connect an external module. Also, this is an older unit from 2007 so there was no reason to pay full retail for it.

Oh...let me excuse myself...the BATTERY LIFE is pretty horrid. I would suggest plugging it into the wall if you're going to do something like read text on it for an extended period of time. I paired the device, charger, USB cord, and a few SD cards with a small bag from lowepro that was made for a digital point n shoot camera because i like to keep equipment and all vital accessories in the same case.

All in all I'm very pleased with the unit. Plays music of course. Great for students. There's a whole lot that it can do. Places like Staples and Bestbuy have for some screwball reason stopped carrying PDAs alltogether! Idiots! Theyre so frickin usefull. There are a slew of PDAs available out there from several good manufacturers, many of them with telephonic capability. They are not "smartphones"...they are PDAs, and it's a good market share for specialized applications in my esteem. Oh well.

HP IPAQ111: One terrific (NON-CONVERGED) Classic pda handheld

Having owned top of the line pdas from Dell, Palm, HP and others over the years, needeless to say I am thrilled with this no frills, basic-style NO-PHONE pda version from HP (The HP IPAQ111). The included CD from HP did not provide the proper Windows Activesync code (for use with MS Windows XP and previous OS versions) or the Windows Mobile Device Center ActivSync code (for MS Vista and Windows 7) that is used for sychronizing the IPAQ handheld with your PC. Thus, I simply went to HP on-line and did a search and I was immediately brought to a Microsoft site where I down-loaded free software for MS Windows Professional (the 32 bit version) for my laptop which by the way worked immediately and flawlessly. MY IPAQ immediately downloaded 2 weeks of MS Outlook email and all othert relevant items (MS word documents, etc.) as well. It could have downloaded much more email in fact, but my internal email setting was nominally set at the factory to be 2 weeks. I felt as if I had my old Palm TX back in terms of the simplicity and ease of it all! But this handheld computer is > twice as fast (624 MHz) as the TX and really works great and includes the latest MS Windows Mobile Operating System (BIOS [Basic input-Output System] version 1.01.06 from April 5, 2008). The amount of available RAM (~50Mb) and ROM (~200Mb) is also excellent for such a small and very pocketable device too. The QVGA (Quarter Video Graphics Array: 320 X 240 pixels) 3.5 inch LCD screen is very sharp with nicely controllable backlighting and also plenty large for my purposes and the included 1250 mAh battery life (1250 milli-Ampere hour means that 1.25 Amperes of current will be provided for 1 hour) seems quite adequate as well. I sincerely hope that as more people realize the great utility of these simple machines compared to the present trend of totally converged (phone-included) devices (and that cost way way too much to operate on a monthy basis!) that the marketplace for these types of units will resume its previous very important status in our EMMS (ever more mobile society!)

On the negative side, it seems for $ 272 (the current Amazon price) HP should also have provided a cradle as they used to do for all of my previous HP pdas. The provided black leather slip case is a nice touch (which is open at the top in order to be able to insert the device, but there is no strap provided to keep it protected from inadvertently falling out), but at this selling price I also wanted something that would protect my investment in this new device all the way around. Fortunately Pocketsolutions and IPAQCases still have plenty of different types of cases and many other great accessories as do a few other vendors. The screen sensitivity is, as other have noticed, a little bit less than I have been previously used to, as it does take a slightly stronger impact by the stylus in order to register, but nothing that is any way insurmountable! Finally, in addition, in my humble opinion , the chosen location of the on-off switch is simply ridiculous, but I can certainly get used to it. It is located on the right hand side (when facing the screen), right near the top of the unit, exactly where I reach to take the device out of the provided slip case. I somehow always manage to turn the unit on accidentally after either removing it or also more importantly when reinserting the unit into the case!

I was really concerned when I purchased this unit that I might need the larger HP IPAQ211 unit which is bigger and heavier overall and has a larger screen and more internal memory and a CF (compact flash) as well as a SD/SDIO (secure digital) card slot for adding additional memory, but I now feel really satisfied that this IPAQ111 will fulfill my mobile personal computing needs quite adequately. For the money that I saved in purchasing the IPAQ111 instead, I was able to purchase two very different and fully protected carrying cases, a desktop charging cradle as well as screen protectors (at least one of which should have been provided by HP in the first place!)

I bought this item as a Christmas gift for my husband. He seems pretty happy with it. Learning new ways to use it. The only problem I usually hear he has is with connecting to the wireless sometimes. Don't know what causes it though.
