Improves the classic G5

I have a lot of experience with PC games, particularly FPS and strategy games that competitively rely on quick reactions and precise controls. I didn't start buying into game specific hardware and accessories until maybe 4 or 5 years ago. One of the first and best upgrades that can aid any PC is a gaming mouse.

I have used and loved the Logitech G5 for most of that time, using the original single thumb button and recently the dual thumb button controls, which I find useful in being able to use with VOIP without taking my hands off the keyboard or main mouse controls, and also for having easy access to my most frequently used or emergency in game equipment. The other great thing about Logitech gaming mice is the customizable and multi-setting sensitivity controls. Games purposefully alter the sensitivity when driving vehicles, firing different weapons, etc, and being able to change the mouse sensitivity allows you the player to take control of these changes and give you the control you want. When default controls are sluggish, I bump up to high DPI to give me speed my opponents don't expect. When things are too fast or sensitive, I bump it down for precision.

I had no reason to buy the G500 other than I had some extra cash, and I saw that the G500 was just like the G5 except with an extra button, hyper-scroll wheel, and a more advanced laser. I thought, better is better so why not try it out?

When first using this mouse you'll realize that is both familiar and different. The shape is just like the G5, only a bit bigger. The customizable buttons and sensitivity options work the same, and the same basic features are there. But there are adjustments to be made.

The DPI controls have moved over to the left-click button instead of behind the scroll. It took some adjusting, but eventually my fingers have readjusted to the new location and I don't have to remind myself (or realize by trial and error) where those buttons are. Also, there are now 3 thumb buttons. Your thumb will have to be more deft to prevent accidental and misplaced clicks, but with time there wont be any mistakes. The added sensitivity is nice, and I'm still experimenting with what 5 presets I want to have, but there is enough of a range for anyone. I don't see why anyone needs 5700DPI of sensitivity, but its there if you can see reason to cover that much screen that fast.

Overall, its a better G5. There's no need to get this mouse if you are perfectly accustomed to the G5 or similar mice, but if you have the extra money to spend, and want to get those extra upgrades, there's no reason not to get this mouse. The G-series gives the best balance of what a good gaming mouse needs.

This mouse is a "rat"

This mouse is huge.....I do really like it though. I have very small hands and I can rest my whole hand on it. I am not a serious gamer, but bought the mouse as I was having difficulty with control using my little microsoft notebook mouse. The games I play don't require all the programming and such, so I haven't used those features yet, but I have experimented with using the weights and adjusting the DPI and it's interesting to note the different effects using the different settings. Also, it's just fun to do.

My one small complaint is the cord. I don't care for the braided cord. It's bulky and gets in my way. It catches on things. That's a small inconvenience though, so no big deal.

I am well satisfied with this purchase.

An excellent mouse for all uses.

This is one of the best computer mouses I have owned. It works very well for all uses and especially for gaming.

Best Mouse I've used

Before buying my Logitech G500 Laser Mouse, I was using the wireless Logitech MX600 Laser Cordless Mouse. The mouse was ergonomic and had a long battery life, but some of the buttons along the top of the mouse were awkwardly positioned, the mouse only operated at 800 DPI, and there was a small but noticeable input lag when gaming (I'd say about 50 to 100 ms delay, just enough to hamper my twitch skill in FPS games). I needed something that had on-the-fly sensitivity changing, precision, good button placement, and instant feedback, and so after careful consideration I saw this beauty on amazon for $55 minus a $15 rebate.

Wow, what a mouse! It feels great, it's got an awesome mouse wheel that can be toggled from click to frictionless for easy scrolling, and it goes up to a staggering 5700 DPI. It's also got an excellent weight chamber where you can fit about 25 extra grams of weight for a weighty feel, or leave it empty and enjoy an incredibly light feeling mouse. The cord of this mouse is long and unobtrusive, and the feet are made of very smooth material, making the mouse glide across hard surfaces. The G500 tracks great on both pine wood and plastic, haven't tried it yet with soft materials but I've heard a soft mouse pad is optimal. Not to mention the size and shape of the G500 mouse is classical MX518 style, so you won't have to get used to a crazy ergonomic palm shaped mouse like with some Razor brand mice.

Go with the G500 if you want all the top features in your gaming mouse without dumb LED lights and ridiculous overpricing. Best mouse I've used.

Not Worth the Money

First I will say that I did not buy this mouse for gaming, so my comments may not apply to gamers. I was, however, searching for a mouse that is very accurate for use with Photoshop and general software. By "accurate", I mean that it quickly and easily slides to my menu choice without me having to make small corrections to get the arrow point on the desired choice.

So after reading all the reviews, I ended up buying the G500. I'm pretty disappointed -- first of all, this is a huge mouse -- it measures 130 mm front to back and 75 mm across at the widest point. It also weighs 126 grams with no extra weights installed. This compares to 121 mm by 62 mm by 86 grams for the basic Microsoft Optical Mouse Blue I have been using.

Also, the scroll wheel on the G500 feels loose. It has a lot of play and just feels sloppy. It also does not have an adjustment (as far as I can tell) to choose the amount of lines to be scrolled.

My hands aren't small, but the G500 is too big for me. Also, it just isn't as accurate as the old Microsoft mouse. I've messed around with the Logitech software settings, tried different mouse pads, even bought one of the $20.00 Razer Kabuto mouse pads (which is very nice, by the way) but it still does not easily settle near a menu choice -- I have to make minor corrects to get the tip of the arrow to land on the correct choice.

So when I slide the cursor over to a menu choice, or a word in a document, it almost always overshoots where I want to go, then I have to bring it back, then slow down and zero in on my choice. Again, I have spent probably 2 hours total with different mouse settings using both the Logitech software and the basic Windows drivers but can't get it any better.

Maybe I'm over-sensitive to this, but I work at a computer all day long with Photoshop, video production software and designing web pages and the weight, size and constant fighting with the cursor gets very tiresome.

I can't believe that my cheap old Microsoft mouse works better. I only need to replace it because it's getting worn out. So the search continues...if anyone can suggest a mouse for me, I'd love to hear it!
