No good for Macs

The experience of this Apple Macintosh computer user (G4 Power Mac on OS 10.4) with this year's Turbotax deluxe was terrible. I was especially disappointed because it has handled my fairly simple tax situation nearly perfectly in the past.

At the start, it failed to access my data from the previous year, although it claimed to have done so each time I tried it. The prior year's data can be very helpful as an example, guide, and memory refresher and its absence made the job harder.

Secondly, it grossly miscalculated the nontaxable part of my annuities, producing taxable amounts that were unrealistically low. And the rigidity of the program made it impossible to correct the errors. I finally had to download the needed forms from the IRS site and fill them out manually.

Third, the live support department is very hard to find and the person I talked to was no help at all.

I've been using this program for many years and love it for its the easy to use and to get it at the best price is a plus. I'll be back again next year!

time saved on tax prep will lilkely be spent on computer fixes

Last year I spent at least two hours with Intuit customer support to finally enable the installation of Turbo Tax Premier 2008 on my Windows XP PC.

I've now spent 45 minutes in front of my gf's Windows XP PC trying to get Turbo Tax Deluxe 2009 to install. None of the fixes have been successful; each fix has required another fix. With her relatively simple return, I would have been done had I just downloaded and printed the forms from the IRS but I was determined to make it work as my copy of Turbo Tax Home and Business 2009 should be arriving today.

If TT2009 doesn't work out of the box on my PC, I'm back to paper and pen.

Intuit, please fire whomever is responsible for this horrible product and go back to the way things were.

Think twice if you need a state return as an out of state resident

Turbotax has been my software of choice for my federal tax return for some years. I'm familiar with it and it does a fairly good job and is fairly easy to use. However, if you want to use its state software to prepare a tax return for a state where you owe taxes but are not a resident - be very cautious. Last year my attempt to use it for a North Carolina out of state resident tax return was such a disaster I gave up and did it by hand. This year the software seems to have improved but did not understand in the guide-you-through-it mode that I needed to indicate taxes had been paid on my behalf by the partnership from which I had the income. I was able to go into form mode and override this but it was not at all easy to either get to the form or input the override. I have no idea if the problem is the same for other states besides North Carolina. For the price, it's certainly not worth downloading a second state when you can't be confident the software can actually do what it purports to do. The problem has made me delay filing my federal return as well because I feel the need to do some careful double-checking to make sure it's not making some similar error, too.

Turbo Tax 09 mediocre

I did not see any real improvement over previous years Turbo Tax. It is fairly straight forward any easy to use. One thing that I found lacking. When I did the recheck to look for errors, it showed me one. It was not very detailed, and had NO instructions to show me how to get back to the problem so I could correct it. It just told me which form was flawed, and the line number of the suspected error. I had to pull up all of the forms and wade through them to find that line. If would have been much less frustrating if Turbo Tax had guided me to the error like say, a GPS.
